Who Won Nobel Prize in Chemistry for developing genetic scissors 2020?

Society Said girls couldn't develop anything for universe but this statement is totally wrong, On Wednesday two scientists named Emmanuelle Charpentier and her Colleague Jennifer Doudna won Nobel prize in chemistry for developing 'Genetic Scissors',  a natural defense mechanism called CRISPR and full form of this mechanism is 'Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats' that can can be used to alter DNA to cure inherited or genetic diseases. This is the first time since 1964 that only a women or a group of women have been awarded the Nobel prize in chemistry for making this wonderful technology.

aglaquestion

Emmanuelle Charpentier and her Colleague Jennifer Doudna allows for laser-sharp shears the long string of DNA structure, this groundbreaking genetic engineering tool precisely alter or edit particular genes to remove errors that causing inherited diseases like cancer, covid-19 and many more. Additionally director of national institute of Health give funds to this development. But many of people against to this development, and that reason behind cautioned is that this technology raises serious ethical questions and if not used by direction direction then it creates problem.

This technology CRISPR introduced in 2008 by Chinese scientist named He Jiankui, his technology is used to helped make the world's first gene-edited babies and which used to alter DNA to cure infection with the AID's virus. This technology developed by chinease scientist used to resist infection and analogy to CRISPR in many aspects like have to treat or cure disease by cutting DNA structure.

Overview of Technology

Charpentier and doudna create genetic scissors to help to alter the DNA, this is a natural defense mechanism called CRISPR-CAS(Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) system. This process helps bacteria edit genetic code with unforeseen precision.

The CRISPR is kind of umbrella mechanism and chemical releases enzyme which is known as CAS-9, which has the ability to identify and cuts that particular DNA. Additionally Jennifer Doudna elaborate this technology to TED Talk in 2015 saying cas-9 carry a new code to introduce in the target sequence.

Technology Used For

  • Alter and edit DNA
  • Edit genes  in human embryo
  • Tweak the gene of HIV Virus
  • Change genetic code to cure cancer
  • Change genetic code of crops to withstand crops and pest

Used to Treat Covid

Jennifer Doudna and Researchers in india CSIR, are used to work hard on this technology to improve to fight against coronavirus pandemic Covid virus. They try to find the exact location of Sars-Cov-2 and alter that location to cure Covid.

As Covid cases increasing gradually up and fatality rate would also been increased so scientist's find numerous different technology or antidote to decrease this spread and now this technology came to existence  probably this CRISPR-CAS is plus point for scientist's  to decrease this spread using this technology.

Future Possibilities

CRISPR-Cas is being used to create new therapies for cancer by altering human immune system. Trials are also underway to see if it can be used to treat inherited diseases such as hereditary eye diseases and sickle cell anemia. Further it can also be used for treatments for detrimental diseases such as Huntington's Diseases, muscular pain and muscular dystrophy.
